A private pool — yours alone

It waits for you up on the terrace, open to the sky: a pool clad in black and white zellige, set flush into the floor, framed by cacti and a prickly pear against white walls. Those striped tiles, painted and laid by hand by Marrakech craftsmen, carry their lines on under the water — the kind of detail you notice over your second coffee of the morning, and photograph over your third. The Jasmin bedroom opens straight onto it: out of bed, three steps, and you are in the water.

Two metres by one: let us be straight with you, this is a plunge pool, not a swimming pool. You do not do lengths in it — you climb in with one other person, sit on the warm edge and let the city recede. It is exactly the gesture you want at three in the afternoon, coming back from the souk with the medina at forty degrees. The water is not heated: it takes the temperature of Marrakech, decidedly brisk in early spring, glorious from May to October, which is precisely when cool water is what you are after.

Above all, it is never shared. No other traveller will settle in beside you: nobody to ask you to turn the music down, nobody claiming the loungers at dawn, nobody to say good morning to in a bathrobe. You decide when to swim, just as you decide when to have breakfast, you leave your things by the water when you head out to dinner, and you find them the next morning exactly where you left them.

Private pool or shared pool: what actually changes

Most guesthouses in the medina advertise a pool, and they are telling the truth — but it is the house pool, shared between every occupied room. So when you are looking for a Marrakech riad with a pool, the question is not "is there one?" but "who with?". Here the answer is simple: nobody. We never let two stays overlap, and there is no room being sold next door to yours. That goes for children too — the terrace is yours, and no one will ask you to keep them quiet at nap time.

When to swim: the pool through the seasons

From May to October the water is at the right temperature and the pool becomes the centre of gravity of the house: you drop in on the way back from the souk, before drinks, after the siesta. In April and November the terrace sun is still strong and the loungers get more use than the water — you dangle your feet in, you take your coffee facing the Atlas. In midwinter the pool is decorative, and the sunlit terrace, sheltered from the wind, takes over, along with the covered lounge under the pergola. We would rather tell you before you book than let you find out: a February stay is chosen for the light and the quiet, not for swimming.

The whole riad, to yourselves

Riad Sasha is not a hotel: it is a house, and we hand it over to you entirely. No reception desk, no lobby, no comings and goings in the corridors — you get the keys to a three-bedroom home, each bedroom with its own bathroom and air conditioning, sleeping up to six. Three bedrooms, six guests

Each of the three bedrooms has its own character and its own bathroom, and all are air-conditioned. The Jasmin bedroom is upstairs on the terrace, a few steps from the water: it is the one people argue over, politely, while the bags are being sorted. The Verte and Noire bedrooms open onto the patio, cooler and darker in the heat of the day — exactly what you want for sleeping. Six people in all, with no improvised extra bed and no sofa bed.

A family who want breakfast in their pyjamas without crossing a communal dining room. Two couples who would rather share a house than book two hotel rooms. The patio and the panoramic terrace

At the heart of the house, the traditional patio lets the sky in: a vertical light well, edged with carved moucharabiehs and black ironwork, with every room arranged around it. It is the lungs of the riad, and the coolest spot in the heat of the day. The thick medina walls keep the city's bustle at a distance — you hear the muezzin and the swifts, and rarely much else.

Climb higher and you reach the terrace, our guests' favourite room — the level that holds both the pool and the Jasmin bedroom. Yellow chevron tiles, ochre loungers, a striped parasol, a covered lounge under a reed pergola for afternoon naps, and a long table for dining outdoors. The view runs a full 360°: the ochre rooftops of the medina, palm trees, a minaret, the palm groves in the distance, and on clear days the snow on the Atlas. This is where the day starts, over breakfast, and where it ends, when the sky turns orange above the rooftops.

Staff and services

This is the difference between simply renting a house and renting a Marrakech riad with a pool and staff: here, somebody looks after the place for you. Our housekeeper comes every morning. She makes the Moroccan breakfast — freshly squeezed orange juice, warm msemen and breads, olive oil, jams — and serves it on the terrace beside the pool, whenever suits you. It is included in the rate, every day of your stay.

While you take your coffee, she puts the house back in order: the riad is cleaned, the beds are made, the household linen goes for washing at regular intervals, and everything is straight by the time you leave for the medina. No cleaning to do, no washing-up to put away — and no room service to bump into either. She is part of the house, and never in your way.

And if you would rather not go back out for dinner, you need only ask her: she can cook for you through the rest of the day, a light lunch by the pool or a proper Moroccan dinner to eat up on the terrace at sunset.
